There are a lot of people who would like to become a project certified manager. One of the things that you have to remember is you need the right amount of work experience before you can become a certified project manager. If you have a bachelor’s degree, you need 4,500 hours of work experience. If you do not have a bachelor’s degree, you need 7,500 hours of work experience. If in case you need to be more precise, you require 36 months of work experience so that you can lead and direct projects.
How to Provide Proof of Project Management Work Experience
You would need to show proof that you have already tallied the number of hours needed so that you can lead and direct projects. Yet, there are instances when you may not have enough proof of your work experience. What are you going to do when this happens? You will be required to undergo a PMO audit. This is an exam that will get information from you regarding your work experience. The main goal of this is to make sure that you have been honest in the work experience that you have provided.
Some people say that you need to document your hours when you are directing and managing projects. Your manager will then take note of these hours and also provide approval so that the audit can be done successfully.
There are also other people who have directed and worked on projects and yet, they cannot disclose the number of hours that they have spent on the project. It will be harder for these people to become qualified to take the PMP exam.
Applying for the PMP Examination
The process that you have to follow in order to become PMP-certified can be complicated for a lot of reasons. If you are unable to provide proof of work experience, you may not be considered to take the exam anymore. It can be overwhelming but as long as you will follow the proper process, it will not be too hard for you.
Registering for a Project Management Institute Membership
Some people consider this as an optional step that you can follow to apply for the PMP certification. This will help you understand the definition of the word “project” when it comes to getting the certification. If you do not have proper eligibility requirements, you may be denied the membership. There are two paths that you can take so that you can become a member of PMI.

In order to make it easier to do the project documentation of your work hours, these are some of the things to remember:
- You need to input your project description but make sure that you will start with the project’s main objective. What did the project want to achieve?
- Place the result of the project in the product description.
- You are not required to be the project manager for each project that you will place in your list of working hours but you need to show that you have shown leadership for all of the projects that you will list down.
- There is a certain number of characters that you need to use. If you need to do so, use abbreviations.
Once you have already submitted this proof, you can already continue on with the rest of the process required to become PMP-certified.
Finish Up with the Online Application
You can start the online application wherein you will be required to input different details and information. You need to complete the online application within 90 days. You can always check the online application if it has already been approved. If in case you were not able to complete the application within 90 days, you need to start again.
Confirmation of Your Application and Payment
It will take up to 5 business days before your application will be reviewed and approved by the PMI. You will be sent a confirmation before you can send in your payment. Remember that sending your payment can be done online. You will also be flagged for an audit if in case there are some details that you have to confirm. If everything is just okay, you will be given the go signal in order to register to take the test.
What Happens if You Need to be Audited?
It can be problematic when you need to submit the audit materials. The usual items that you need are the following:
- You need 35 contact hours.
- Copies of your diploma
- Your references
If in case you do not pass the audit, the processing fee will be refunded back to you.
Taking the Exam
Let us say that you have now passed everything, you need to take the exam. You can take the PMP Course so that you will be prepared for the exam. The exam will probably take four hours to complete but you can take some breaks in between. Even if you are in the bathroom, your time will still be ongoing. If in case you do not complete the exam, this will depend on you.
After you have completed the exam, you will immediately know your score. You will also know if you have passed the exam or not. Even if you pass or fail, you will not know the percentage of the items that you have done. You will be allowed to take the exam three times a year. If in case you fail three times, you can make attempts again next year.
